Mile High & Down in Dixie

Georgia Rhythm: Roonie G to rock Mix Ultra Lounge.

Denver – The America’s Best DJ Summer Tour Presented by Pioneer DJ & DJ Times went Mile High this past weekend and now it looks forward to heading way down in Dixie.

In Colorado at the spectacular Red Rocks Amphitheatre for Global Dance Festival this past July 19-21, we caught three days of distinctive beats. Day 1 included a decidedly hippie vibe with Emancipator’s atmospheric main-stage set getting the nod for best performance. Yes, plenty of patchouli was in the air, not to mention the distinct scent of Colorado’s newly legalized crop.

Day 2 was more raver-friendly with top trance jocks Sander van Doorn and Arty uplifting the main-stage fans, who also enjoyed the vocal stylings of Emma Hewitt. Over at the Afterhours Anonymous stage, dirtybird’s Justin Martin was the MVP, as he rocked a three-hour-plus set of diverse house flavors—quirky dirtybird tracks, loopy groovers and taut bangers. Justin Martin flat turned us out.

Day 3 featured big bass drops and a dollop of disappointment—only four of the festival’s five ABDJ nominees made it to the gig. MiMOSA and Seven Lions pulsed the low-end frequencies for bass freaks, while RL Grime and Baauer teamed for a traptastic main-stage set. Unfortunately, turntable wizard Craze apparently missed his flight and canceled his appointment with the second stage. Pity. Still, it’s hard to find too much fault with any event at Red Rocks, one of America’s greatest music venues. Thanks to GDF organizers Triad Dragons and to all the great Rocky Mountain EDM fans—can’t wait to return next year!

This weekend, we’re off to Columbus, Ga., for a Saturday evening with amazing video jock Roonie G at his very own venue—Mix Ultra Lounge.

On a personal note: I’m very excited to head back to the Fountain City, my hometown, and I’m looking forward to see how differently the locals party in 2013. Not to sound too much like Matthew McConaughey’s Wooderson character from Dazed & Confused—a fairly accurate cinematic portrayal of the time—but I’m guessing it’s a little different from how it was done back in my day. For one, this party’s in a proper nightclub, not a ballpark or 7-11 parking lot. Maturity certainly has its rewards.

Just as we were at Red Rocks, DJ Times will post up at Mix Ultra Lounge with a dedicated table taking votes for Roonie. Remember, one lucky voter (online or at one of the ABDJ events) will win a trip for two to Las Vegas for the ABDJ Closing Party/Award Ceremony at Marquee Nightclub on Oct. 13.

We’ll see you down in Dixie.
