Just For Kicks:

New York City – Hailing from the somewhat “uptight” country of Austria, it’s understandable that Peter Rauhofer doesn’t like to talk to the press—about anything. Or have his picture taken—by anybody. It probably stems from his belief that no one can faithfully represent in words or pictures the way he feels, the way he thinks or the way he sees himself.

But it’s this Teutonic trait, this exacting nature, that’s responsible for his success as a Grammy Award-winning remixer, label owner and producer. In other words, Rauhofer’s got 4/4 in his blood, but that doesn’t mean he’ll arrive for a photo shoot or an interview on time. No, that means he can hear a Madonna track and determine the proper key in order for its remix to work in a small and large club; or which one of 500 grooves he’ll play to an a cappella to get his drum patterns just right. It’s this penchant for precision that helped him win 1999’s Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year.

Music Software Mania:

With so many fast advancements in technology, it’s come to the point when the majority of your studio can exist within the confines of a single Mac or PC. But no, it’s not so simple that you can take your old Apple IIc out of the garage and hope to compete with the likes of Daft Punk or the Crystal Method on the dance charts. You need a computer with enough brainpower and memory to handle all the action. Once you’ve got that hooked up, get ready to be sucked into the ones and zeros of a “virtual” music studio. There are so many amazing music software applications available now that it’s daunting trying to figure out what to buy. So let’s break it down to the different types of applications in each field. From there you can eenie-meanie-miney-moe your way—or make informed choices if that’s your style—to a complete software-based studio.
