Catalog CDs Without Lifting A Finger
CD Trustee is a Windows program that catalogs your music collection by inserting and removing CDs in your computer. It works by accessing an Internet database to find the artist name, album title, song titles and music genre all by itself. This database is constantly kept up to date, with new albums added every day. Once the program is installed, you press a button that says, “Add CDs Automatically.” You then insert a CD in the drive and wait a few seconds while the program reads the code and automatically ejects that CD. You continue to catalog all your CDs this way. When you’re finished, press another button to access the Internet, and your database is built for you. You can add additional data manually, like the location of the disc, your ratings, or whether you loaned it to a friend. The program can print cover images for insertion into a jewel case and can display the artist album and song title while you’re playing the CD.

D.A.S. Compact 1 & Active Subwoofer

D.A.S. Audio’s Compact 1 is a self-powered, three-way, biamplified system, designed as a full-range, stand-alone unit without needing bass reinforcement. Distributed by Sennheiser, the system uses a 1,000-watt “Class D” switching amplifier that in turn uses two Bang & Olufsen PowerHouse 500-watt ICEpower(r) amplifiers. The low-frequency section is made up of the D.A.S. G-354, 15-inch low-frequency speaker with four-inch voice coil. A horn loaded B-6, six-inch cone loudspeaker reproduces mid-range frequencies and an M-5, one-inch exit compression driver with a two-inch titanium diaphragm handles the high frequencies. The Active Power Sub 118A is a self-powered Sub 118A that also has a “Class D” switching amplifier, and a Bang & Olufsen PowerHouse 500-watt ICEpower(r) amplifier. The amp is protected against over and under-voltages, incorporates a set of protections for the amplifier and loudspeaker and has soft clip and soft start-up functions. The Sub 118A houses a D.A.S. P-18 18-inch cone transducer configured as a direct radiator. The P-18 features a 3-inch voice coil and a cooling scheme designed for high power handling and low-power compression. The cabinet provides an on-axis frequency range of 35Hz - 150Hz and a rated maximum SPL of 131dB (at one meter). The enclosure (740mm x 51mm x 41mm) cabinet is finished with a catalyzed polyurethane paint that provides weather resistance. Loudspeaker components are protected by a steel grille and are sealed against corrosion by a polyamide powder coat finish.

EM-1 Joins the Tribe

Korg’s EM-1 is the latest addition to its ELECTRIBE Series, featuring two synths and eight drum parts, 11 insert effects, real-time and step sequencing and Korg’s motion sequencing. The unit’s PCM sound engine includes 144 drum sounds, including vintage kick drums and snares along with classic and techno drum sounds. Fifty synth waveforms are included, ranging from deep bass and vintage analog synth waves to moving modulation timbres like sync PWM, plus chord tones, hits and sound effects. All sounds are fully programmable, and give you control over pitch and amp envelopes. For synth tones, a resonant filter and glide are also available. A drive effect lets you add more bite to the synth and drum sounds. Each pattern can be one to four bars long and can be entered in real time or step entry through a 16-key illuminated keypad, with eight drum and two synth parts per pattern. Korg’s motion sequence function memorizes knob movements used to vary the volume, panning or filter cutoff of a phase. Two motion sequencers per drum part and up to three per synth part can be recorded. For live performance, real-time functions like part solo/mute can produce variations from a single pattern. An on-board digital effects processor gives you 11 types of effects ranging from standard reverb and chorus to resonator and ring modulator. Each part can either bypass or be sent to the chosen effect. A master delay effect can also sync to a particular pattern for locking tempo. You can edit all effects through dedicated knobs or through the motion sequencer. A total of 192 editable patterns cover genres like house, techno, trance, two-step, UK garage, rap and hip hop. You can also save your own creations. Up to 16 songs can be created with up to 256 patterns and 35,700 events each. The pattern set function can arrange up to 64 patterns across the step keys so you can switch patterns in real time by using the keys. A tempo lock feature and a tap tempo function gives you more control over patterns.

Yamaha Works It

Designed for a home studio or as a front end to a computer-based recording system, Yamaha Professional Audio’s AW2816 Professional Audio Workstation records up to 16 tracks of 24-bit digital audio and includes motorized faders, DSP features, automation/snapshot capability and MIDI remote. As a digital mixer, the AW2816 has 32-bit DSP capabilities (similar to that of the Yamaha 02R), 28 fully-automated audio inputs (16 of which are from the internal hard drive), nine motorized faders, four fader and mute groups, four bus and four aux sends plus stereo and stereo cue busses. All 28 inputs (including eight analog and eight digital inputs via an optional interface card) have digital attenuators, four-band fully parametric EQ, and direct out assignment. The rear panel contains eight 24-bit mic/line inputs, two of which are XLR with +48V phantom power, plus a high-impedance input that will accept a guitar or other instrument directly. Memory areas include scene, channel, EQ, dynamics and effects. An inclusive 16-track recording system, with editing and mastering capabilities, has 24-bit, 48 kHz resolution without data compression, and records directly to the internal 20 GB IDE hard drive. Two 32-bit onboard effects (including Yamaha’s Reverb Technology) may be routed to any bus or input channel directly, or re-routed during recording to create layered effects. A quick record screen allows graphical input patching. A control key assignment allows you to assign any frequently used function to any “F” key, located below the 320 x 240 backlit LCD screen. Full MIDI implementation allows the AW2816 to function not only as the front end – but also as control –for computer-based recording systems, and also allows the direct recording of MIDI-based instruments. A SCSI interface is included for data backup to an external drive. The AW2816 is fully expandable. Easily routable SPDIF I/O is provided as standard digital output. A rear-mounted YGDAI card slot will support current and future products from Yamaha and third-party developers, and will also allow any of the 16 tracks, inputs and/or assign busses to be output in digital form for further processing, or for transfer to external digital devices. An integrated FLASH ROM operating system enables software upgrades to be loaded from CD or the Internet. An integrated CD-RW drive, which enables mastering as well as loading and/or backing up data, is installed in a front-mounted port for easy accessibility. Yamaha Corporation of America P.O. Roland’s CDX-1 DiscLab

Roland’s CDX-1 – a music production workstation based around CD – is a combination phrase sampler/hard-disk recorder with built-in CD-RW drive designed to handle the music production process from phrase sampling and 8-track digital recording to effects processing, digital mixing and mastering. The CDX-1 can perform multitrack recording directly to CD-RW media and allows you to create music by using sampled loops, by multitrack recording, or both simultaneously. As a phrase sampler, the CDX-1 can store and recall up to 64 samples via eight onboard sample pads (using eight banks). Phrases can be recorded from live inputs or tracks recorded to the CDX-1’s separate multitrack recorder section or directly loaded via the internal CD-RW drive using audio CDs/CD-ROMs containing .WAV files. The onboard 16MB sampling memory can be expanded up to 128MB using optional DIMM memory. Phrases can be truncated, looped, normalized – even time compressed – using editing functions equal to that of the SP-808EX e-Mix Studio. From there, they can be processed using two onboard stereo effects processors, re-sampled and arranged to four stereo or mono Phrase Sequence tracks. In addition to its sampling capabilities, the CDX-1 also features an 8-track recorder section for recording live input sources such as a microphone, synthesizer or guitar. Up to eight tracks can be recorded (two simultaneously) using 24-bit converters for sound quality – all directly to the internal CD-RW drive. Phrases from the sampler section can also be transferred to an open recording track, while a built-in Rhythm Guide/Drum Machine contains multiple drum patterns for easy song creation. Like the sampler section, audio tracks can be processed through the CDX-1’s dual stereo effects processors which include algorithms like COSM Guitar Multi for recording guitars direct and a Center Cancel effect for removing vocals. Once audio tracks and samples have been recorded, you can mix down to the built-in stereo master track. Then by ejecting the original CD-RW disk and replacing it with a blank CD-R disc, you can burn a playable CD while using the Mastering Tool Kit, which comes with split-frequency compression and 4-band EQ for producing masters.
