Numark’s Latest
Numark
According to the company, Numark’s Pro SM-1 professional scratch mixer incorporates the Ultra-Smooth crossfader to create a more reliable, long-life mixer – not an easy task in the battle-jock market. The optional crossfader uses a quiet photo coupler for clean sound and also has a slope adjustment control dial, plus a direction-reversing hamster toggle on the faceplate. The input faders – with three position contour adjustment switches mounted on the faceplace, are also active. Heavy duty input toggles are designed for rapid transforming and can be customized into eight optional positions, according to the company. Input options for the toggles include up to four turntables with two switchable over to line level signal on the rear panel. A combination XLR/¼-inch Neutrik microphone input on the front panel has its own

Mr. Clean
Steinberg’s Clean software, a CD recording and restoration program for Windows, allows users to create custom CDs as well as to refresh audio recordings on vinyl, cassette or similar media. Six real-time restoration modules, based on Steinberg’s WaveLab technology, can be listened to simultaneously and parameters adjusted in realtime when the program is running on a Pentium II computer. Clean can handle up to 99 titles per track list. Every title can be performed with a Fade In and Fade Out. The software then exports the track list as a text file for printing. The program supports all standard CD burners using disk-at-once mode.
For more specialized editing, Clean includes
Steinberg’s sound editor, WaveLab Lite.

Put Your Signature on CD-Rs
Primera Technology
The Signature II CD color printer from Primera Technology, Inc., can print full-color text, logos, graphics and photos directly onto CD-R media, jewel case inserts and booklets. The new inkjet printer is, according to the company, 30- to 100-percent faster than its predecessor, with four print modes: draft, high, Photo 300 and Photo 600. The printer lets users customize color CD-Rs in as little as two minutes for software distribution and beta releases, data archival, audio and music recordings and digital photography. The printer can work in less than 20 seconds in monochrome mode. Signature II comes with printer drivers and interface ports for Windows 95/98/NT and Mac. CD-ID for Windows, a design program with CDs in mind is included, but almost any graphics program will work with the printer. The printer’s drivers will “knock out” the center hole of the design during printing. An interface port supported by many duplicators and auto-loaders is
built-in to the Signature II.

Remix with next!
Tracoman
Capitalizing on the increase of DJs getting involved in remix production, next! has released a line of professional remix products. They include two Analog Bass Synthesizers, a Resonator, a Vocoder, and a 24-bit digital sampler. The Analog Bass Synths, the basic SpaceBass 3.3 and the more advanced SuperBass 4.4, were designed to emulate the classic sounds of the Roland TB-303. These units feature completely analog circuitry. The 24dB filters can be modulated with Cutoff, Resonance, and Envelope Modulation. The SuperBass 4.4 includes extra features such as Accent, Autoslide and Distortion, as well as MIDI control of all its features for the ultimate sound control. These products will be available by themselves as well as in bundles including a 37 key MIDI keyboard, Cakewalk Express 3.0, and a MIDI cable. The Rez-30 Resonator features three band-pass filters. Each band has resonance and cut-off points which can be modulated by the built-in LFO, the polarity reversible envelope follower, or by an external control voltage. The Rez-30 is ideal for processing any signal to get rich, warm sounds of the ’70s with ’90s technology. The Vocoder is used to create funky robotic voices as heard on the new Beastie Boys single “Intergalactic” and Daft Punk’s “Around the World.” The Vox-11 Vocoder can also create new sounds and modulations by processing drum loops or giving new life to old synth sounds. This unit features an internal noise generator, which eliminates the need for an external synthesizer to create the robotic voices. For those who wish to use their own synthesizer, a line input is provided. The Vox-11 also features 11 filters similar to an EQ to create cool vibrato and phaser effects.

ADJ's Master Blasters

Electronic Thermo Sensing technology controls the temperatures in American DJ’s new Master Blaster foggers. The ETS technology can detect even slight variances in temperature, and instruct the fogger to act according, turning the heater on or off. This lets the unit produce fog more consistently, according to the company. The Master Blaster line of foggers, the 700, 1000, and 1500, all have cleanable heaters to prevent the build-up of mineral deposits that might clog fog machines. All three models come with a removable controller with a 25-foot cable and a removable one-quart fog juice tank and hanging bracket.

Two Effects from Martin
Denmark’s Martin Professional has introduced two new intelligent lighting effects, the Acrobat and the MAC 250. The Acrobat pans, tilts and turns to produce 50 moving color beams, flying color splits and twisting gobo effects. A combination color/gobo wheel, plus a mirrored rotating disc reflector, creates an effect of each beam chasing the other while the colors and gobo patterns change. Eighteen gobos plus open and 11 full Dichroic colors plus three Dichroic split colors plus five white complete the package. The unit can be controlled by any standard DMX 512 controller or can react in time to the music. The MAC 250, a compact, moving-head effect, has a color wheel with 12 dichroic color filters and eight replaceable rotating gobos for beam-shaping effects.
A rotating three-facet prism rotates at varying speed.
The shutter allows for strobe effects up to 20Hz, while a user-configurable objective lens and motorized focus optimizes output,

High Flying Effects from Martin
Martin Professional has introduced three new sound-activated lighting effects for the mobile DJ. By projecting light through a color wheel of 13 dichroic colors plus open onto a rotating disc reflector, Discovery creates a cone effect of light. The light is then focused through an optical lens so that each beam will chase the other while changing color. The Adventurer produces sharp light beams that chase each other while changing color and gobo shape. The final of the three effects, Voyager, creates a changing mix of colors, gobos and beam rotation by projecting light through a color/gobo wheel onto a rotating disc reflector with front end mirrors. Voyager offers 19 gobos plus open and 11 full Dichroic and three split dichroic colors plus six white.

Sampling next!

The next! DJS-24, according to the company, features a 24-bit DSP engine. Different sampling rates can be chosen ranging from 44.1 kHz (CD quality) down to 22.05kHz for longer sampling time. The DJS-24 also features compressed and uncompressed modes, as well as mono or stereo modes. The DJS-24 comes with two megabytes of memory. An additional two, four, or six megabytes of RAM can be installed by the user for a maximum sampling time of six-and-a-half minutes. Up to 32 samples can be stored within the DJS-24’s four sample banks. The samples can also be stored and retrieved to and from a Windows-based PC via the included PC companion software. The fun begins once the sample is recorded. The DJS-24 features non-destructive editing so the user will always be able to change the start and end points of a sample. The right spot is located with the built-in jog wheel, which enables the user to search frame by frame. Other sample editing features include pitch control, seamless looping, reverse play mode, and a forward and reverse direction scratching function with cue point memory. The DJS-24 operates in three different modes: DJ Sampler, Jingle Machine, or Sample Sequencer. In DJ sampler mode, the sample will begin playing when the button is pressed and will keep playing over until the button is released. The Jingle Machine mode was developed for radio DJ applications. Once the button is pressed, the sample will play once until the end or until the button is pressed again to stop the sample. In this mode, the display will count down the remaining time in tenths of a second. This gives the DJ an idea of the time left before starting the next audio source. In sequencer mode, several samples can be sequenced and played back to back without interruption.
