February 1999
Volume 12, Number 2

“I’ll Give You Everything ”
Victoria Angeles
Robbins

Commanding freestyle beat kicker with a new school attitude and plenty of Big Apple bravado to boot. Angeles tears up the lead with an intensive vocal display of self confidence, while veteran producer Carlos Berrios remixes the tune into a frenzy with his signature style of raw beats. Simply put, “Everything” is a highly addictive freestyler with tremendous potential and universal appeal. Recommended.127.6 BPM.

2 Future 4 U EP
Armand Van Helden

Armed

A five-song EP with a little flavor for everybody. Garageheads will fall for “U Don’t Know Me,” which features a strong vocal from Duane Harden, while disco-flavored house enthusiasts should line up for the “Psychic Bounty Killaz, Pt. 2,” which has DJ Sneak’s fingerprints all over it. Van Helden even gets into some very salacious Latin house with “Entra Mi Casa.” But the massive underground bomb comes with “Necessary Evil” – basically rhythmic samples of a saw set to slammin’ house beats.
Offbeat and irresistible, “Necessary Evil” is Armand’s
latest dancefloor classic.

“Eternal Flame”
Hypertrophy
Tommyboy Silver

Even more spectacular than its worldwide smash “Beautiful Day,” Hypertrophy’s Euro-flavored “Eternal Flame” is fantastic blend of synthesized string swiftness and bouncy beats that march proudly alongside a sparse, breathy wordplay. (And dig the Steve Miller sample.) New York City remix phenom Junior Vasquez then expands on this theme and transforms this tasty morsel into a main course filler. A definite must-have
for dance music connoisseurs the world over.
Highly recommended! 132.1 BPM.

“Gym & Tonic”
Spacejam
Logic

This pumpin’ new jam should go over real well with the aerobics crowd. George Calle’s “Disco Pimp Vocal” is a lively affair with a scintillating disco groove and some fun breaks. There’s also a “White Trash Mix” that gets a little deeper and a little funkier with some filtering and sampling going on. A spacey hypnotic groove that will work the deep house clubs, “Gym & Tonic” rocks.

“Enough Is Enough”
Stonebridge And Robbie Rivera
Waako

Stonebridge and Robbie Rivera revisit the past and spin this Donna Summer/Barbra Streisand classic into a hard-driving floor thumper that recalls old-fashioned Chicago house flavor. DJs will love the piano stabs and string riffs that take their respective turns plucking away at the misty backdrop of beats and bass. Vocalist Black Dahlia does an impressive job of combining two parts into one continuous melody. A twisty blend of old and new that is sure to please. It clocks in at 130 BPM.

“New Kind of Medicine” b/w “Pressure”
Ultra Naté
Strictly Rhythm
Ultra

Homegirl has definitely got it goin’ on and this new double pack showcases two cuts that are sure to find their way up the charts – the funky R&B groove of “Medicine” and the all-out house track “Pressure.” “Medicine” is a welcome change for her with its spicy keyboard hook and soulful bassline. This cut could find Ultra a whole new audience. “Pressure,” on the other hand, finds her on familiar ground with a pumping house track that works “a spank” sample and some excellent vocal arrangements.
Albert Cabrera rocks the remixes here. And they do rock.

“All Because Of You”
Estee
Timber!/Tommy Boy

Freestyle by nature, electro-dance by name describes this back-in-the-day-flavored, electronic hip hop beat catcher. The package includes a variety of remixes of the original Manny Mohr and J.J. Flores production, but Harlem Knight’s version, which is built around the Jonzun Crew’s ultra classic “Pack Jam (Look Out For The OVC)” rhythm track, stands tall. His simple but infectiously rhythmic interpretation brings out the best the song has to offer and, in turn, highlights Estee’s soulful and delicious vocal presentation. Outstanding addition to any set. 127 BPM.

“Planet Whip”
Oakland Stroke
Tommy Boy

Sort of an ode to the Dazz Band classic, “Planet Whip” features several remix interpretations that are allgood. Standouts include the original mix with funky chord hits and a Daft Punk-like percussion groove. Deep filtered breaks and phat bassline dominate this mix, while Fred Jorio’s “Lectroluv Remix” takes a more traditional house approach. Deep, hard drum intro breaks into a trippy trancey track. There’s also an “O.S. House Experience Mix” that’ll work the turntables as well.
– Phil Turnipseed

“1999”
Hard Drive
Gossip

Just in time for the New Year, Hard Drive drops a progressive groove on the Prince classic. With newcomer Tiki Jones lending her soulful vocal presence, this track pushes hard and soars with European flare. Hard drum rolls, filtered chords, and massive breaks push the drama on the main mix. Make sure you check out the “Armageddon Mix,” a funky number with filtered vocal breaks and some familiar sample hits. This mix could be a sleeper. A complete slammin’ production. Not what you’d expect from AV8, but it’s the bomb! – Phil Turnipseed

“(You Got Me) Burning Up”
Cevin Fisher
Tommy Boy
Cevin Fisher

Global DJ and producer extra-ordinaire Cevin Fisher rips it up on this punchy, after-hours house anthem with a barrage of well-placed, retro sample stabs laid carefully over a frantic beat track. Along with the tune’s overall sense of urgency, the razor-sharp synthesizer snips and steadfast bassline push this cut over the edge and into an area usually reserved for future classics.
A sure-fired dancefloor motivator with an attitude. Hot! 129.1 BPM. For more information

Not A Game
EP Serious Malfunktion

Velocity

Velocity drops a four-track EP that’s just bangin’. Starting off with sinister deep “Not A Game” track, this is all about the groove. Using a wicked vocal hook, a phat bassline and some slinky keyboard hits, “Not A Game” will be the pick hit. But “Sing the Word” is a cool, funky number with a disco-ey bass and some slick, filtered breaks. There’s also a smooth Lou Rawls-like spoken word vocal that gives this cut some flava. All four cuts are phat and can work into most house formats. – Phil Turnipseed

“Shake It High”
The Hangman
Cutting

Get ready for some phat Latin house beats. The 2 in a Room crew (the Vargas Bros.) return with a wickedly deep gem that is soulful and chunky. Working their trademark vocal style on the “Shake It Up Club Mix,” they bring the horns, vocal samples and choppy breaks for an all-out house party. Also check out the “Old to the Newbeats Mix,” which features some great old-school sample beats and scratches. – Phil Turnipseed

“Someone To Hold”
Veronica
H.O.L.A. Recordings
Veronica

Veronica’s follow-up to her well-received chart topper “Let Me Go...Release Me” is a hardcore ensemble of synthesizer savvy. Backed up by a vigorous and commanding percussion arrangement, Veronica’s smooth vocals add the perfect touch to an otherwise flawless production of peak-hour dance floor fodder. With its wonderful melody, “Someone To Hold” is a straight-off hit and my pick of the month without a doubt.128 BPM.

U.F. Off: The Best of The Orb
The Orb

Island
Alex Paterson

When it was released in 1991, The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld offered a pillowed pause for sweat-drenched hardcore ravers. “A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating…” and “Little Fluffy Clouds,” despite their anachronistic lineage to mid-’70s progressive waft, defined dubby, chill-room music and, in the process, spawned ambient house. But The Orb’s mastermind, Dr. Alex Paterson, proved a remarkably adaptable bloke in the ever-shifting tides of dance music. The 7-inch mix of “Blue Room,” for example, fits nicely in a French le fonque disco set. Any drum-n-bass jock will benefit from “Toxygene (Ganja Kru Remix),” and world-beat enthusiasts will welcome the ethno-techno of the previously unreleased “Mickey Mars.” Cobbling together two remixes of “Perpetual Dawn,” “DJ Asylum” (the 7-inch edit is the winner), “A Huge Evergrowing...” and “Little Fluffy Clouds,” among others, the two-disc U.F. Off salvages a decade of Paterson’s more eclectic moments and casts him as a survivor in the
“Johnny One-Note” world of dance music. Brian O’Connor

“Up and Down”
Vengaboys
Groovilicious
Vengaboys

The Vengaboys (Danski and DJ Delmundo) definitely bring the noise on this one. It’s a hard house groove that shakes with authority. “Club 69’s Tribal Anthem” is just that – a bangin’ tribal house groove that builds, drops out and builds again. There’s also a “Tin Tin Out Remix” that has peak hour written all over it – definitely for the headstrong. Also check out “Club 69 Tribal Dub,” a phat house groove that works the percussion to the hilt. Slammin’. "Up and Down" is certain to be a
Groovilicious' next big club hit. – Phil Turnipseed

“Buffalo Gals Back to School”
Malcolm McLaren & The World Famous Supreme
Teams Vs. Rakim & The S-Man Roger Sanchez

Priority/Virgin

Bring the noize! Hip hop flava runs rampant on this new cut that brings the incomparable Rakim to the mic on this soul clappin’ jam – it’s the bomb! The “Rakim Remix” will work the hip hop crowds and Rakim is in vintage form. Add in house master Roger S on his “Spicy Buffalo Wings Mix” and things get wild. His radio and “Spicy” mixes are chock full of wild sample hits, crazy breaks and soulful ’70s-style grooves. The track is workin’ and should be a fun piece to any party. – Phil Turnipseed

Soundtrack to the Streets
Kid Capri

Columbia

With the help of some friends, DJ Kid Capri drops a full-length joint that showcases the mixmaster’s inventive style. A 26-track epic, Capri uses the talents of Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, Nas, KRS-One, and Foxy Brown, just to name a few. With so much talent on one full-length, you know the tracks have to be on. The title cut, “Like That’s,” “Unify,” “Do or Die,” and “Loud and Clear” are some of the standout cuts, but there are also quite a few interludes that are also workin’. Kid Capri rocks the house from ground zero and shows that his talents stretch way beyond the ones and twos. – Phil Turnipseed

“Fiesta”
Frankie Bautista
H.O.L.A. Recordings
Frankie Bautista

A fierce and feisty Latin house dub track. “Fiesta” revolves around an adrenaline-enhanced foundation of spicy Spanish percussion, hard house high-hat tricks and a bombardment of orchestral hits. This rough and rugged cut is a peak-hour pulsator. 131 BPM.
