Dance
Synths from Korg

Two new synthesizers from Korg were designed to fill the needs
of electronic dance music artists, including DJs and remixers.
The ELECTRIBE-A Analog Modeled Synth and the ELECTRIBE-R Rhythm
Synthesizer are descendants of the DSP synthesis technologies
used in Korg’s Z1 and Trinity V3 MOSS synthesizer engines and
the Prophecy and OASys synthesizer platforms. The ELECTRIBE-A,
a two-part DSP-based synthesizer, has a synth engine which offers
two oscillators per voice, a resonant filter, and oscillator
modulation capabilities like Ring Modulation, Sync, and Decimator.
Effects are part of the tone-generation system, and include
a dedicated distortion control. A motion sequencer lets the
user record a given knob movement per part, so that filter sweeps
and sound changes can also be recorded. The ELECTRIBE-R combines
a four-part DSP-based synthesizer with four additional PCM sound
sources for classic hi-hat and cymbal tones. Synth voices include
dual oscillators, waveform modulation, amp and panning parameters.
Both models use the step-grid interface common on dance products,
but also allow for real-time recording. Different patterns can
be assigned to each of the sixteen step keys during live performance.
Both synthesizers are MIDI capable and retail for under $500.

Roland
in the Mix
Roland Corporation has released the DJ-1000 professional DJ
mixer. The two-channel unit features a built-in digital BPM
counter, MIDI sync capabilities and analog synth-type effects.
The unit can detect and display BPM data from most audio sources
and send this information to MIDI-equipped synths and drum machines,
like those in Roland’s Groove family. The mixer’s basic elements
include independent three-band EQ per channel, three selectable
inputs per channel (one phono, two line), and replaceable crossfader.
A three-position “grab” switch allows instant access to the
channel EQ, allowing radical EQ tweaks to the mix on the fly.
Independent booth level control lets DJs control their own booth
mix separately from the club mix.

Serve
‘Em Up
The new Unity Series Loudspeakers from Sound Physics Labs –
the parent company of ServoDrive, Inc.—features a patented Unity
Summation Aperture design, which is based on utilizing a pyramid-shaped,
multi-band wave guide to combine the amplitude and phase from
a variable number of drivers into a single, coherent output.
The result of this design, according to the company, is that
the sound emanating sounds as if a singled river in a simple
controlled radiation pattern produced it.
