Furman's Headphone Revision
Furman Sound has revised its new HDS-16 Headphone/Audio Distribution system. The revised system routes eight mono and four stereo signals to remote mixing locations via Centronic’s 50 pin cables. Each musician can make his/her own multi-channel or monitor mix, and ward off your loneliness by allowing you to talk to other users through a talkback system. The SOLO system allows you to mute all but one stereo send from the mix location, making reviewing recent takes or rough mixes easier.
The HDS-16 gives you full-patching functions on its front panel through a ¼-inch and “TT” input jacks and is designed to be installed at the main mixing location. The HDS-16 remote mixer attaches to a mic-stand, comes with its own hardware, so you don’t have to scramble around for that screwdriver, and is self-powered.

TASCAM's 8-Track Recorder

With a nod to the bedroom DJ/producer, TASCAM has released its DA-78HR 8-track recorder with 24-bit resolution. The recorder features TASCAM’s Application Specified Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for improved modulation and error correction code algorithms. This allows 24-bit digital audio data to be written to standard DTRS format tapes while retaining original tape and drum speed. The ASCI-IC accomplishes this by using a data modulation system in which 24-bit word lengths are accommodated in TASCAM’s Auto Track Finding (ATF) system. The ASIC-Ic incorporates data modulation algorithms for both 24 and 16-bit DTRS recording and playback. Full compatibility is assured with DA-98/88/38 16-bit digital audio tapes at either the 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sampling frequencies. High-Resolution mode allows the unit to record and play back all eight tracks with full 24-bit resolution at either the 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sampling rates. Additionally, an 8-by-2 MIDI compatible mixer, providing volume and pan control over all eight tracks, is featured, allowing the engineer to create an easy reference mix. These mixes can be routed onto two tracks on the existing tape or via S/PDIF to any external digital recorder, like a DAT.

The Summit of Audio

Summit Audio has introduced Element 78, a digitally controlled EQ-200 offering a stereo/dual mono Class A analog signal path. Switchable shelving or peaking filters for low and high frequencies, sweepable low and high midrange frequencies and high and low-pass filters offer a roll-off rate of 12dB/octave in this unit. The filters can be stacked for a 24dB/octave rolloff. Output noise spec is roughly –95dBu and THD is below 0.001% for mastering, mixing and tracking. The EQ-200 is fully controllable by a second EQ-200, an MPE-200 mic pre-EQ or by the Extension 78 Digidesign Pro Tools plug-in. The EQ-200 can also control the EQ-200S and MPE-200S slave units. In addition, 25 on-board user presets reset and recall all parameters of the unit using information accessible from MIDI sequencers or data filing systems. Full MIDI implementation allows unlimited storage of project settings. The Extension 78 is a plug-in designed to control, via MIDI, its Element 78 analog signal processors, like the EQ-200. It allows full automation, slave control and parameter saving along all of the analog signal paths within the Pro Tools session. The Extension 78 pulls down on the Pro Tools digital audio workstation and operates like other TDM plug-ins. It uses no DSP power but provides control of up to 32 channels of Element 78 equalizers, including the EQ 200S and MPE-200S slave units.
