“Do You Love Me?”
Gift Of Love Feat. Demi Moore
Tommy Boy Silver
New York-based producer John “HDZ” Hernandez presents us with a thunderous house anthem that pits cutting-edge rhythms against a backdrop of boisterous beats. On this floor-filler, Hernandez also interweaves a raspy, yet uplifting spoken-word message from actress Demi (“That’s Duh-me”) Moore that complements a flawless track. 132 BPM.

“Orgasm”
Erotica
Whirling

The names speak for themselves. Complete with a subliminal bass line that disappears into supple string settings and reappears in a forest of jungle rhythms, the exotic “Orgasm” sets the pace for others to follow. Add to that a Cevin Fisher remix that sports a harder edge with a stiff upper lip and you end up with a smooth and sexy Saturday night smoker.
Seductive, to say the least. 126 BPM.

“Body”
Funky Green Dogs
Twisted

They’re back! Funky Green Dogs return with a blistering new single taken from their hot new forthcoming album Star. Already burning up dancefloors everywhere, these two remixes of “Body” showcase the considerable talents of Club 69’s Peter Rauhofer and Ashley Beedle, respectively. Club 69’s “Future Mix” is what you’d expect – hard and edgey with an intense rough bass and relentless percussion groove. “Ashley’s Sirius Red Hard Mix” gets a little deeper with more of a minimal house groove to it. Along with some great vocals, “Body” is the bomb. – Phil Turnipseed

“Bliss”
Mutiny
MAW

Exceptional new garage house jam that features an excellent female lead vocal and a classy smooth house production. The “Original Sunflower Mix” glides along at about 124 BPM and keeps the chords flowing, while the “Vocal Dub” sends chills with its deep, vibey bass-laden groove. Wait’ll you hear the bass. Masters At Work add a soulful, jazzy mix with some great piano work and Miles-like horn groove. – Phil Turnipseed

Galaxy Freestyle Records Dance
Compilation #1 Various Artists
Galaxy Freestyle

Galaxy’s first dance compilation works as a festive ladies night out. Through a constant presence of “Planet Rock”-type beats, interwoven with variant shades of acidic bass lines, these female artists roll with freestyle flavor. Of the 13 songs contained on the disc, all but two – trippy house tracks “Funkytown” by Mikatronik and “House This” by Randy Taylor-Weber – contain female leads. As for the remainder, Daisey’s “Look Into My Eyes” is the only song of the bunch that receives two mixes – the former a progressive freestyling beat kicker, the latter a floor-stomping house thumper. Jossette’s “In A Dream” gets a romantic overhaul in the form of beatless piano and a string-driven interlude. As for the rest of the package, you will be glad to find artists like Emotion In Motion, Daviah, Noelia and Julissa giving it all they have and attacking their individual songs with passion. Recommended for progressive freestylers everywhere.

Blue Dice Project
EP Richard F.
Subliminal

These mixes rock. Producer Richard F continues his upward climb to clubland’s elite with this phat double-pack EP that showcases his prodigious talents. Take your pick. Of the four cuts included, each one is decidedly uptempo at 128 BPM and filtering effects are hard at work here as well. All tracks are worthy of a night’s work and should add great flava to any house set.

Com’anga
Louie “Balo”
Guzman Sugardish

“Com’anga” starts off as a basic beat pattern and slowly progresses into an ensemble of Afro-Cuban percussion – similar to that found on the beginning of Musique’s “Push, Push In The Bush.” The combination of cow bells, bongos and congas keeps a feverish dancefloor pace. An experimental journey into the world of drum-n-bass from a Latin perspective. 127.7 BPM.
Taken from the “Boogie Balo” EP.

Pulse Feat. Antoinette Roberson
Jellybean

The second time around for this chart-topper is the charm, as remixers Richie Santana and Peter Bailey take this dancefloor staple to new heights. As the vicious melody wrecks havoc on dancer’s senses, Roberson’s vocals shine brighter than ever.

“I’m Comin’”
Taana Gardner
West End

After a much-too-long absence, Gardner steps back into the spotlight with a kickin’ new single. It’s a funky little number that’s got some real remix flava. Of the three mixes included, check “Nick Siano’s Blazin’ Mix,” a garage groovefest with a busy percussive rhythm track, an ’80s retro piano hit and a tough bassline. It’s workin’. “Nick’s Retro Dub” is more of the same with a nice Philly groove to it. Truly soulful. Gardner’s voice has matured a lot, but, hey, what pipes! You go, girl. – Phil Turnipseed

“Take the Long Way Home”
Faithless
Arista
Faithless

Four mixes highlight this new cut by Faithless with Grant Nelson’s remix being the standout. It’s a soulful groove with a vibin’ keyboard hook and some nice bottom to it. There’s also a nice electro-vocal hook. Also check the dramatic “98 Steps Mix,” which features a smooth, almost ambient intro that progressively gets more intense, using elements of Euro, house and ambience.
Very nice. Do not miss this because all four mixes are working.

“Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves”
Marina & Hazel Dean
MRK

Poppy, perky and energetic, dual divas Marina and Hazel Dean tackle the Eurythmics cover with a vengeance. Perfect for high-energy advocates and lovers of soulful hooks, “Sisters” features eight mixes, the best of which (“Roc & Presta Extended Mix”) punches along at a comfy pop-house pace. – Peter Colon

“Outside”
George Michael
Epic

Ya gotta check these phat new remixes. Razor N’ Guido’s “Orange ‘e’ Dub,” a hardhouse jam, builds to a furious peak and stands as a serious winner. Relentless and in-your-face, it breaks down and builds again. Meanwhile, Hex Hector’s 12-inch vocal mix stays a little more true to the original, while adding a few twists, as well as bringing out some of the sounds from the album version. It’s working. – Phil Turnipseed

“Is It You (Déjà Vu)?”
Made Men Feat. Master P
Restless

More hip-hop flava compliments of Master P, who stars as a guest artist here. The real props go to Made Men who sample the classic “Déjà Vu” and roll into a sexy hip-hop, R&B groove. With a nice female vocal chanting the title and Master P adding his vocal, this could find instant radio action. – Phil Turnipseed

“Love Gets Going”
Tiki Jones
Gossip
Tiki Jones

New artist Tiki Jones definitely gets going on this soulful house jam. With a great background vocal hook to give it a foundation, this new single is a great showcase for this up-and-coming talent. “The Live Element Remix” is an uplifting piano-laden mix that could find a mainstream audience. For a little more underground flava, check out the “Live Element Dub,” a sexy deep house gem that will easily get club action. Quality from start to finish.

“When Will I See You Smile Again”
Ricky Bell
So So Def

Remember Ricky Bell from New Edition and BBD? Well, Jermaine DuPri did the smart thing and brought him on board at So So Def. That move should prove to be a great match based on this new single – a lively rendition of the BBD R&B classic. Bell’s soulful vocals glide over and electro breakbeat and bumpin’ groove. BBD’s most underrated singer gets to shine here.
Look out radio. No doubt. – Phil Turnipseed

In the Lab With DJ Nabs: The Live Album
DJ Nabs
Columbia
DJ Nabs

A blast from the old school channeled through the nimble hands of Georgia-based DJ Nabs, In the Lab offers the actual experience of Hotlanta’s Kaya club when it’s goin’ off. Aside from the tasty scratching (not too much) and blending (just right), Nabs’ mix-CD keeps the momentum going with some live flow from Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow and Wyclef Jean. And the classics -
MC Shan’s “The Bridge,” Quest’s “Check The Rhyme,”
Eric B. & Rakim’s “I Ain’t No Joke,” etc. -
still stand the test of time.
A history lesson that’s great fun. – Jim Tremayne
