TASCAM's CD-302 Freshens Up

Version 4.0 of TASCAM’s CD-302 software adds +\-100-percent tempo adjustment to augment the CD 302’s +\-32-percent tempo/pitch adjustment feature, sample fader start/stop and a one-touch reverse sample playback mode. The new package also includes Sonic Foundry’s ACID DJ software, a CD collection of loops and grooves from EastWest and DJ Davey Dave giving you some tips and tricks on an included video. The CD-302 is a two piece unit with separate player and controller modules connected through two eight-pin cables. The player module houses the CD transports in a 2U, 19-inch rackmount enclosure and can play back standard CD disks, three-inch CD disks and CD-RW disks. The two CD players act independently, like turntables, with one player cueing up music while the other’s playing. The control module includes enough RAM (in Play or Cue mode) for you to loop until you can’t see straight along with 10 seconds of sampling. A built-in RAM buffer gives you a 10-second shock buffer and instant start. A JOG wheel lets you scratch, analog-style. The controller module, housed in a 5U, 19-inch rackmount enclosure, also gives you auto cue, sleep function, tap tempo button, pitch slider and bend.

Community Gets Louder

Community’s XLT500 Series just got bigger. Five new arrivals to the line include the XLT502 and XLT505, a pair of stage monitors; the XLT509, a dual-15 subwoofer; model XLT530, a three-way, bass reflex trapezoidal enclosure designed with portability in mind. The last of the additions is model XLT525, a trapezoidal three-way speaker, designed also with portability in mind. The full-range loudspeakers include Community’s IntelliSense protective circuitry, which operates hand in hand with its Power- Meter LED indicators so that the speakers can give it their best without damaging system components in the process. It works like this: PowerMeter LEDs, on the front and back panels of each unit flash green to let you know the signal’s there, yellow when the loudspeaker is going into the first stages of protection. Full protection is indicated by a red light. Within this protection mode, the IntelliSense automatically attenuates speaker levels to a safe range. Once the gain has been reduced, the circuit resets itself and the speaker gets back to full power and operation. Excluding the subwoofer, a UC-1 one-inch compression driver is included in all of the models. A bullet-type phase plug is designed to enhance high-end performance by eliminating phase anomalies and erratic phase response. The XLT500 features glass epoxy circuit boards and uses 250-volt mylar capacitators along with a pro-grade interlocking connector and ¼-inch jacks. Sandwich core plywood makes up the speaker’s enclosures. Corner protectors, recessed handles, a black carpet finish and stand sockets finish up the package.

Akai Candy
Akai’s latest, The MPC2000XL-SE1 is a MIDI production center that includes an integrated drum machine, a 16-bit sampler and a MIDI sequencer. This unit has 16-bit, 44.1kHz stereo sampling engine and a re-sampling function that lets you resample at lower frequencies and rates for that lo-fi, grainy sound. The MPC2000XL-SE1 comes standard with 2MB (or 21.9 seconds) of memory, which can be expanded to 32 MB (or 378.6 seconds). After you’ve recorded your samples, you can play them all back at once using a 32-voice polyphony. You can also mess around with each of your voice feature filters by using a dynamic resonant lowpass filter, and time-stretch to shorten or lengthen your samples. Pitch shift makes sure they’re in tune. A note variation slider gives you control over the attack, decay or filtering of any sound either during recording or in a separate pass.

Korg Gets Kaotic

Combining its second generation KAOSS Pad with a DJ mixer, Korg has come up with the KM-2 Kaoss Mixer. The KM-2 is designed to give you professional mixing capabilities, real-time effects processing and a new level of control over sampling. The KM-2’s mixer section gives you two channels, each with line and phono inputs. Channel one features a mic input that can be routed through the KAOSS Pad so you can treat it for effects or sampling, or the mic input can be used as a talkback source without running it through the channel input. Each channel features three-band EQ, input gain faders and peak indicators. The mixer includes Master and Booth outputs, a headphone/booth monitoring switch (so you can cue your stuff) and a 12-step LED display for output signal monitoring. The crossfader has three crossfader curves, designed for traditional signal mixing and scratch-based stuff. The KM-2 also includes Korg’s Ultra Boost technology, which adds low end to the signal so that it won’t distort the speaker system. The KM-2 also has an auto BPM function so you can lock in the tempo of an incoming signal, as well as a standard Tap Tempo input with three-digit BPM LED. Each channel can remember its tempo so you can switch between sources. Sampling on the KM-2 has been spruced up with 23 seconds of sampling time at 44.1 kHz/16-bit sampling rate. You can take samples from the mic/phono or line inputs and you can sample through the KAOSS Pad’s effects, including any real-time movements. Four dedicated sampling buttons let you trigger samples independently from the pad’s effects.

It gives you a 230-watt 15-inch woofer and a 70-watt, 1 1/4-inch compression driver with a titanium dome. Behringer says it’s designed the speaker to be lightweight and compact, a practical solution for DJs. The system gives you two-band equalizer with 80 Hz 12 kHz center frequencies. It has an active phase accurate frequency crossover at kHz with 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley filters and extensive phase and time correction, designed to relieve you of the need for external processing and amplification so your storage, transportation and set-up is a little easier. The speaker boasts complete protection against power-up noise, overloading and overheating. Both drivers are overload protected with limiters for distortion-free reproduction. The polypropylene cabinet cools the speaker with automatic convection cooling.

Say Wah?

Fans of Ritchie Hawtin, pay attention. The FF-X Funky Box from Godlyke Effects is a tube-driven, envelope-controlled filter that gives you an array of automatic wah and swept filter effects. The effect has relaxed tracking and a warm tube tone. In Godlyke’s own words, “It’s a squawking, burping, bleeping, farting filter fiasco.” Enough said.
