Pioneer’s Digital Turntable

The CDJ-100S digital turntable is a front-loading unit with
three-second insert and two-second eject. Built-in effects include jog-dial controlled jet, wah, zip and break. Digital outputs allow CD duplication while an oil damper system floats the tray
mechanism to help prevent skipping. The player can search 50 tracks in one second and can be started automatically from
DJM series Pioneer faders.

ETA’s PD11 Pro Series

Five new models of ETA conditioned power-distribution units have 20-amp, 2,400-watt capacity. Each has three-stage spike and surge protection, two-stage EMI/RFI filtration and eleven AC power outlets. The PD11 Pro Series uses surge-suppression diodes, metal oxide varistors and gas discharge tubes to protect electronic gear from power fluctuations. Eight switched and two protected “always-on” outlets are located on the back panel of each unit, while the front panel contains a protected 15-amp convenience outlet. Each unit has digital voltmeter readouts and dual swivel, high-output rack illuminators. One model includes a four-step microprocessor controlled sequential turn on designed to reduce high rushes of power.

Take Acid
Sonic Foundry’s “Acid” music production software, designed for the DJ/remixer, allows the user to manipulate any one of hundreds of available loops into a musical production. Acid can preview any loop and automatically match the tempo and pitch in real time before adding it to the mix. Volume, pan and effect level automation can be added for each track. Acid’s extensive loop library archive features such diverse styles as techno, rock, breakbeat, funk, industrial, ambient, country, turntable, guitar and sound effects, among others. System requirements are a Pentium 133 microprocessor, VGA Display, CD-ROM drive, 32 MB RAM and 5 MB of hard-disk space for program installation.

Denon’s Dual MD Player

Denon’s DN-M2300-R is a dual Mini- Disc player and recorder aimed at DJs. The unit offers two independent MD drive units – one for record/playback and one for playback only. Up to five cue points can be assigned to each track for quick searching, with more than 50 tracks available per disc. The mach- ine permits A-B looping of any time and length. Editing functions include multiple levels of “Undo” and “Redo.” Ten front panel Hot Start buttons allow songs or sound effects that have been loaded into memory to playback instantly. Flourescent tube displays show disc play status, elapsed and remaining time and other information, including a 10-segment “countdown” bar graph that indicates the current position within a track. The dual disc player includes two jog/shuttle wheels, auto cue, pitch bend, and a pitch control slider. Playback starts less than .01 second after the Play button is pressed. The 10-second digital memory guards against interruptions due to bumps or vibrations.

Crest Audio’s Pro II
Crest Audio has expanded its Pro II series of light-weight power amplifiers with the introduction of the 7002 and 4802 models, both of which are two-rack space units. According to the company, the 7002 is rated at 515 watts @ 8 ohms, 830 watts @ 4 ohms and 1150 watts @ 2 ohms. The 4802, on the other hand, is rated at 370 watts @ 8 ohms, 600 watts @ 4 ohms and 800 watts @ 2 ohms. By drawing current through the entire AC voltage
sine wave, PowerLok-equipped amplifiers require lower
peak/RMS current that do traditional designs.

For the Record

Shure Brothers has introduced three new hi-fi/home audio phono cartridges, the M97xE, M94E and M78S. Manufactured with all-metal Phillips head mounting screws and color-coded cartridge connector pins, the cartridges offer easier stylus insertion. The M97xE uses the same dynamic stabilizer damper/de-staticizer and die cast aluminum mounting block as the company’s V15VxMR Audiophile needle for accurate sound reproduction of vinyl recorded content. The M94E is also available for use with P-mount tone arm systems (MP94E) while the M78S was designed for playback of 78 RPM recordings.

Opcode Has a Vision
Opcode Systems has introduced its new computer-based audio and MIDI sequencer, Vision DSP. The sequencer supports Steinberg’s VST audio plug-in architecture for extensive real-time effects. The software supports audio cards such as Korg’s 1212I/O, Lucid’s PCI 24, the Sonorus STUDI/O and Digidesign’s Audiomedia III. Vision DSP is the first Opcode product to use the company’s parametric Eqs – five different types, including fully parametric “peaking,” high-pass and low-pass filtering, plus high and low shelving. The software comes bundled with effects including echo, cycle, align, chorus, Rezn8, plate, comp, squash, panner and ring modulator. Four audio insertion points on each audio channel can be filled with the user’s choice of effects. All EQ and effects settings can be stored and recalled for later use. Four additional effects sends per channel can route signal from tracks to stereo busses for further effects processing or to
Vision DSP’s recording inputs, allowing the user to record internal audio mixdowns for hard disk archiving or recording CDs. The software includes all of Studio Vision Pro 4.0’s interface and editing enhancements, including the Pulse Edit window for
quick creation of rhythmic parts, groove quantizing on playback and record, a built-in Arpeggiator window with sequence lock
and programmable key commands. Vision DSP comes
bundled with Opcode’s Galaxy universal patch librarian for
MIDI devices, Peak SE sample edit software from BIAS and
demo versions of several audio plug-ins.

Win for the Federation
Red Sound – distributed in the States by Tracoman, Inc. — has introduced its Federation BPM FX module. According to the company, the Federation will allow DJs to explore the world of “BPM-driven effects.” Featuring four tempo related DSP effects, the Federation uses a patented BPM engine to trigger the effects in synchronization with the audio input. The user can select from a range of musically correct timing presets (quart- er, triplet, whole note, etc.) for each effects module. The four effects are: filter/LFO; cutter/volumer; delay; and panning. The on-board event sequencer re- cords the user’s own patterns for custom- ized triggering of the effects. The central joystick mix control allows real-time blending between the four effects while the input tempo source can be selected from audio input or external MIDI clock.

Vega Expands EMP Series
The latest addition to Vega’s EMP Series is the T-691 UHF synthesized wireless microphone handheld transmitter. The transmitter uses an Electro-Voice externally-biased true condenser microphone element and the same Embedded MicroProcessor technology as other EMP transmitter models. The EV RE500 microphone element allows the transmitter to operate on direct 9-volt power, while a microprocessor “sleep” mode further prolongs battery life. The T-691 uses Dynex III audio processing and low noise audio circuitry and offers 50mW of output power to transmit up to 1,500 feet in good conditions.
