MIDI Made Easy

Akai Musical Instrument Corporation has introduced the MPC200XL, a MIDI production center that combines a sampling drum machine and 64-track sequencer. Designed to function as the centerpiece of a MIDI studio, the MPC2000XL builds on the success of the MCP2000, according to Akai. The unit has 16-bit stereo sampling and 32-voice polyphony. It comes equipped with 2 MB RAM, expandable to 32MB. Each voice has dynamic resonant filters, new time stretch capability, graphic cut-and-paste sample editing and resampling capabilities. New software tools include timestretch, resampling, device naming capability, MIDI soft thru, multi-track recording, and simultaneous playback of a second sequence. The new unit is compatible with all MPC2000 disks, and can also load samples from Akai’s S-Series sound library. It supports Akai’s SampleVerb 4-bus digital multi-effects processor, allowing users to work with up to six different effects simultaneously. SampleVerb offers two multi-effects channels that include distortion, EQ, flanging, chorus, phrasing, stereo pitch shift, ring modulation, auto-panning, rotary speaker emulator, delay/echo and reverb. Storage options include hard drive, CD-ROM, Zip and Jaz disks.

Look Ma, No Hum

ServoDrive has introduced the new HummFree ground loop hum eliminator. The HummFree uses proprietary circuitry invented by Thomas Danley rather than active circuitry or balanced line transformers. This proprietary circuitry allows the audio signal to pass through without any alteration, allowing the frequency response to range from DC to VHF to UHF without any degradation to the signal quality. The HummFree is designed to operate anywhere ground loop occurs. The HummFree reduces 60-cycle ground loop hum by a factor of 1,000, and this reduction improves as the frequency increases.

The mirror ball rotates 360 degrees at 3 rpm, for a reflection of gobos across walls, ceilings and other flat surfaces. The Party Gobo Lamp comes with a standard white lamp, but American DJ’s color gel filters in colors like shocking pink, electric blue, and magenta can change the mood and look of the light.

Cakewalk Finds the Groove
Cakewalk has signed a licensing agreement with Italy’s IK Multimedia Production to exclusively distribute GrooveMaker and GrooveMaker MAX in North America. GrooveMaker, a loop-based mixing software for creating electronic dance music, is a real-time, random, remixable groove generator, compatible with both Macs and PCs. The MAX edition includes two additional loop library CD-ROMs. Real-time mixing allows musical samples to be loaded and mixed “on the spot” without interrupting the groove that is being played. Hailed as a “Rave-in-the-Box” by Cakewalk, the software provides samples of a variety of instruments, including bass, percussion, synthesizers, pads, vocals and effects. The Virtual Synth Arpeggiator allows users to play live along with any remix. It also offers 99 synth sounds, more than 30 presets, and a “smart-notes” function to ensure users always play in key with the current mix. The V-Mix “Virtual DJ” automatically generates hours of random remixes without repeating the same groove twice, while the GrooveSequencer module lets users arrange custom grooves into a full-length remix that can be saved as a stereo wave file or as eight individual stereo tracks.

Triple the Fog

American DJ has just introduced three new foggers – the Volcano, the Stallion and the Dyno-Fog – designed to fill a wide range of fogging needs. All three units are ETL and ETLC listed and designed for 120V operations. The Volcano is a continuous output fog haze machine that distributes 2,500 cubic feet of smoke per minute evenly throughout a room. The machine uses Electronic Thermo Sensing to produce a thinner, whiter fog. The Volcano has an initial warm-up time of four minutes, and includes a remote timer for output and interval control. The Stallion, a high-volume fog machine designed for large venues, produces 10,000 cubic feet of fog per minute. The Stallion has a 1300-W heater and also uses ETS technology for continuous heating regulation. The unit has an initial warm up time of five minutes, and holds two liters of fog fluid in a removable container.
The Dyno-Fog is a lightweight, medium-duty unit designed with the mobile DJ in mind. This 10-pound machine produces 4,000 cubic feet of fog per minute with a 1,000-W heater, and has a warm up time of five minutes. The unit comes with a hanging bracket for easy mounting.
