Power in Numbers

Community’s latest addition to its XLT500 Series is the three-way, full-range XLT530. The loudspeaker uses a bass-ported design with a single 15-inch, Ferrofluid-cooled low-frequency driver and a one-piece fiberglass horn section containing a 6.5-inch cone midrange driver and Community’s UC-1 one-inch compression driver. For better coverage, narrower horizontal coverage or vertical mounting, the 65- x 30-degree high frequency horn can be rotated. Operable from 50 Hz to 18 kHz with a sensitivity of 101 dB SPL at 1W/1m and a maximum output rated at 133 dB SPL (peak), the XLT530 is protected by Community’s IntelliSense circuitry, which operates in conjunction with its PowerMeter LED indicators so that peak performance levels can be reached and maintained without damaging system components. Found on both the front and rear panels, the PowerMeter LEDs flash green to show signal presence, yellow when the loudspeaker is going into its first stages of protection, and red to show that full protection is on. In the protection mode, IntelliSense automatically attenuates speaker levels to a safe range. Once the gain has been reduced, the circuit resets itself, restoring full power to the speaker. The XLT530 has interlocking corner protectors, recessed handles, rigging points and a stand socket on the trapezoidal XLT530 enclosure that measures 34 inches tall by 20.3 inches wide at the front, and 18 inches deep. Made from sandwich-core plywood, the black-carpeted cabinet is additionally fitted with a 16-gauge perforated steel grille, and weighs in at 65 pounds.

Steingberg HALion

Steinberg ‘s HALion is a virtual sampler for VST-compatible production systems. It gives you automation and control effects through MIDI controller data or by tuning the samples to the right key. With an embedded loop editor, the sampler features a crossfade function to help you set the optimum loop. Zero crossings are automatically identified and the non-destructive editing saves you faulty edit steps. It doesn’t matter if you want samples to be pitched, modulated or reversed, HALion’s editing facilities lets you create complete programs and layers in the keyzone window. You load samples directly into the keyzone window in HALion using a drag & drop-job. The samples appear graphically on the screen. Through resizing and moving the keyzones, you set velocity and layers. All filters and settings can be made global for each sample as well as the whole program. With WAV, AIFF, EMU and AKAI import functionality (more to come) HALion is equipped for sampling CDs.

AKAI MFC42

Akai’s MFC42 MIDI Filter Controller—optimized for the MPC-Series products, including the MPC60/II, MPC3000 and MPC2000XL—is a digitally controlled analog filter module that features four selectable filter types: real-time control of filter, LFO, distortion, phasing and envelope parameters. The MFC42 features two independent channels, including 1 x stereo channel for processing MPC drum sounds, and a separate mono channel for bass. The MFC42 comes with an assortment of standard inputs, plus direct turntable inputs. Since most of the controls on the MFC42 generate MIDI controller data, performances can be recorded and saved using the MPC’s sequencer. The MFC42 offers 2-pole and 4-pole curves on the stereo channel, while 2-pole, 4-pole and an 8-pole filter is available on the mono channel. Four filter types are provided on the MFC42, including low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch filters. Toggle switches are provided so you can switch to any filter type, without needing to scroll through unwanted choices. Dedicated controls for the cut-off frequency and resonance let you shape real-time sound, from sub-sonic to extreme weirdness. For maximum modulation flexibility, the MFC42 can assign the LFO and EG (envelope generator) to either channel for real-time changes. The on-board LFO can sync to external MIDI clock to match the tempo of any beat. It’s also possible for you to control the LFO rate using Tap Tempo and Beat Sync (the latter lets you manually control the duration of the LFO/Envelope). And when assigned to the stereo channel, it’s possible to shift the LFO phase between the left/right channels. Each channel on the MFC42 is independent, but Link and Invert functions allow interaction between the channels. The Link function, not surprisingly, links the channels together, so that any changes made on one channel will affect both channels. The MFC42 also provides built-in effects like distortion, a stereo analog phaser, and EQ for additional sound shaping.

American Audio Pumps It Up

The latest generation of American Audio’s DCD-PRO 200 MKII features additions like Fader Q Start, Flip-Flop, and Anti-Skip Protection. With the Fader Q Start feature – and using one of American Audio’s Q-Series mixers, you can crossfade directly to a pre-programmed cue point on a CD—the cut will start playing at the specified cue point, rather than at the beginning of the song. Up to five different cue points can be programmed per CD. Another new feature is Flip-Flop, which automatically switches over to the second CD and starts playing it after the first CD is finished. The Flip-Flop feature also gives you the option of switching between CDs at the end of each song. Mechanical anti-skip protection is another new addition to the DCD-PRO 200 MKIII. The DCD-PRO 200 MKIII’s other features include instant start, digital output, 1/75 of a second frame-search, three different speed scans, 30 programmable tracks, pitch sampling and a bright LCD display (including time display). A standard 19-inch rack mount unit, the DCD-PRO 200 MKIII occupies two rack spaces.
