TASCAM has released the Pocketstudio 5 and the SX-1 Digital Production Environment. The Pocketstudio 5 is a portable multi-track digital recorder that uses Compact Flash cards for media, has an internal MIDI Synthesizer module, and can create final
stereo mixes in MP3 format. The SX-1 combines automated dig-
ital mixing, hard-disk recording, MIDI sequencing, editing, DSP effects and CD-burning capabilities into a single production unit. TASCAM’s Pocketstu- dio 5 provides four elements for songwriting and recording: a four-track digital recorder, a MIDI synth module for playback of standard MIDI file sequences, MP3 mixdown ability and a USB port to send completed songs to computers for e-mailing and web site posting. One hundred built-in effects allow the Pocketstudio 5 to act as a complete production device.
As a digital recorder, its editing capabilities include auto punch in/out, copy/paste editing of audio and MIDI tracks using bars-and-beats and track bouncing. The Pocketstudio 5 can run for up to two hours using AA-sized alkaline batteries and the unit also includes an AC power supply, a 32MB Compact Flash card, and a headset microphone to supplement its built-in condenser mic.
Designed to accommodate the needs of professional project studios, commercial recording facilities, broadcast production, and places of worship, the SX-1 is an all-in-one solution for professional audio recording, MIDI production and editing. The unit’s feature set includes: a flexible 40 input, 32 x 8 x 8 digital mixing console, a 16-track hard disk recorder, waveform, MIDI, and automation data editing. The SX-1 offers users complete surround mixing capabilities, a 128-track MIDI sequencer, built-in CD-RW drive, DSP plug-in technology, analog, digital, MIDI and computer interfacing and built-in timecode/sync support via SMPTE/LTC, video sync, and Sony P2.

Propellerhead Software

M-Audio
45 East Saint Joseph Street
Arcadia, CA 91006
800-969-6434
www.m-audio.com

Designed for both Windows and Mac, Propellerhead Software’s Reason 2.0 is an upgrade to the original music software program and it emulates a rack of electronic synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, effects and sequencers.
The Malström Grain- table Synthesizer is an added feature for Reason 2.0, which combines granular synthesis with wavetable synthesis. Graintables are flexible sound sources, allowing for manipulation – this includes being able to move through a sound by controlling the movement with real-time controllers, velocity, modulators and finding possibilities by controlling the spectral harmonics of the Graintable. Malström’s two filters both have five different modes, including 12dB/oct low pass, band-pass, subtractive and additive comb-filters and an AM mode. A shared filter envelope is also included which can control either or both of the filter sections at the same time.
The Shaper shapes the input signal with either a sine wave, noise or can transform the sound using saturation, digital distortion or bit-reduction. Furthermore, the oscillators can be routed in many different ways to the two filter sections providing many sound manipulation options. Sound-generating parameters can be controlled using CV and gate controls from the Matrix sequencer or other Reason devices. Malström provides audio inserts between oscillators and filters with the benefit of being able to use both filters as standalone devices.
The NN-XT Advanced Sampler includes automatic pitch detection and mapping of samples, graphical zone editing, loop editing, layering plus zone velocity switching, and crossfading. The main sequencer breaks free from the rack and can expand across the screen or be resized and moved, even to a second monitor. New tools include Zoom, Line and Eraser.
Reason 2.0 comes with patch and library material for the two instrument devices. An orchestral ReFill, created for the NN-XT, is included. These sample patches feature live, classically trained musicians and the samples are designed to blend in with the sounds from Reason’s other devices. The Orkester NN-XT Sound Library spans from single woodwinds to complete string sections, and covers all playing styles.

BIAS’s Deck 3.5

BIAS, Inc.
1370 Industrial Avenue
Suite A
Petaluma, CA 94952
(707) 782-1866
www.bias-inc.com

BIAS, Inc.’s Deck 3.5 is a new version of their multitrack digital audio workstation software for Macintosh. This upgrade brings support for Mac OS X, plus features such as OMF file importing and 5.1-channel surround mixing. Deck 3.5 has CoreAudio support for multi-channel and multi-client hardware, low latencies, high sample rates, and a fast, highly stable, multi-threaded operating environment. Deck 3.5 is a Carbonized application, and therefore will also run under OS 8.6 or 9.x.
In addition to import/export QuickTime movies, with better-than-frame-accurate synchronization, Deck 3.5 supports importing OMF sessions from video editing and authoring applications such as Final Cut Pro, Avid, and others. Sessions from OMF-capable DAWs – including Pro Tools, Digital Performer and Nuendo – can also be imported. Deck is ideal for spotting effects, editing dialogue, processing soundtracks, and recording ADR voiceovers. Additionally, Deck 3.5 can output surround sessions to DVD authoring applications that include AC3 or DTS encoding.
Deck 3.5 offers built-in 5.1-channel surround mixing. Deck 3.5 is perfect for music producers – whether they’re re-purposing stereo media for surround mixes, or crafting multi-channel audio mixes from the ground up.
The surround interface includes a 360-degree surround mixer, a “virtual joystick” with a choice of three optional panning algorithms: Radius, Variable-Width, and Room Ambiance. Each channel in the mixer displays its own 360-degree panning window. Each supports up to four simultaneous VST signal-processing plug-ins. The master output window features a fader for all of the six surround outputs (including the subwoofer/LFE channel), plus individual meters. The interface offers control over output assignments for each of the six channels (requires ASIO or CoreAudio audio hardware with at least 6 output channels, and drivers).

Community’s MVP25 loudspeaker employs a compact and lightweight design suited for small PA systems. Operable between 70 Hz and 16 kHz, the MVP25 houses a 12-inch low-frequency driver and a LM20 non-metallic, ferro-fluid cooled compression driver coupled to a 90- x 40-degree horn. With a maximum output of 116 dB SPL, the enclosure’s sensitivity is rated at 94 dB SPL (1W/1m), while power handling weighs in at a 150W RMS, 375W program.
Community’s thermal-link circuitry monitors and adjusts high frequency performance based upon the constantly changing protective threshold unique to any given application. Solid-state and self-resetting, the network insures that the MVP25 can remain running at maximum output, without the risk of loudspeaker damage.
Standing only 20.4-inches high and measuring 14.5-inches wide by 13.8-inches deep, the MVP25 is constructed using internally braced MDF board covered with black carpeting. Other features include recessed handles, rubber feet, interlocking corner protectors, a die-cast zinc stand socket, perforated 16-gauge steel grille, T-nut mounting points, and a rear panel equipped with ¼-inch connectors.
