New
York City –
Last time we checked in with Armand Van Helden life was uncommonly
good for the Manhattan-based DJ/artist/producer.
It
was springtime and he’d just been nominated for a Grammy Award in
the new remixer category. He’d secured an artist deal with Sony-distributed
Ruffhouse Records. His remixes for artists like Tori Amos and Sneaker
Pimps had kicked off a cult of personality in England (called Speed
Garage) that saw a cottage industry of rubberized basslines arise
from clubland.

Ever
since breaking onto the American dance scene in 1996 with the Berman
Brothers-produced “This Is Your Night” Dutch songstress Amber has
been one of clubland’s most consistent hitmakers.
Follow-up
smashes “One More Night” and “If You Could Read My Mind” – the Gordon
Lightfoot-goes-Hi-NRG number performed with Jocelyn Enriquez and
Ultra Naté – kept the Tommy Boy artist in good graces with America’s
more pop-leaning DJs. Now Amber’s back with “Sexual,” another club
hit that’s sure to gain nationwide attention for its hooks and subject
matter. DJ Times caught up with the Dutch diva, who currently
resides in New York.

Payola-for-Referral:
DJs Take Sides.
|
Have
you ever paid a “fee” to a banquet facility manager in return for
their referral?
Let’s say that XYZ Videographers is going to refer a DJ service from
a list of 10 mobile companies they trust to one of their clients.
But DJ One Productions offers to pay XYZ Videographers a 10-percent
“fee” if the referral goes to them. Does this reek of payola? Or,
is it simply free enterprise at work and another great way to increase
your bookings and your profit? On both the East and West Coasts,
a variety of opinions abound.
