Volume 12, Number 9

"Deeva Feeva"
Glasgow Funk Tracs
Playland
Using the sample hook from Two Tons of Fun's classic "I Got The Feeling," producer G. Gilroy works a funky jam that's sure to rock the dancefloor. Included are some very slick mixes by Plastic Avengers and the very able Pete Heller. Both Heller's dub and main mix are piano-driven, beat-laden grooves that will impress club DJs. Plastic Avengers' mix gets a little deeper with that filter thing going on. A totally fabulous track..

"Love Story"
Georgie Porgie
Music Plant
This gorgeous piece from Music Plant's vocal prince should come as a pleasant surprise for those who know Georgie's work. A real mainstream cut a la N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, React, etc. Georgie gives an inspired performance on a totally fabulous track that could be a breakout for him. Great lyrics, catchy hook, and totally cool mixes will win him new fans everywhere. Excellent.

"Voulez Vous"
K7 & Ty Bless
Select

One of the original freestylers returns with a funky R&B number that should win him a whole new audience. Manhattan's favorite barrio boy K7 breaks off a bangin' piece, which features the rap vocals of Ty Bless. Complete with five cool mixes, the "Original Street" and "Rap Street" mixes will definitely find a home with hip-hop jocks.

"Movemania"
Shannon
Contagious
Popular Brit DJ Sash! gets live with a new scintillating dance piece that features none other than Shannon as lead vocalist. With ten blistering mixes ready for consumption there'll be no shortage of dance variety coming off this cut. But to be sure the Original Extended with its touch of NRG will be a favorite in the mainstream as well as the tough Morel & Bristol Remix. Shannon sounds absolutely wonderful and this cut will go a long way to putting her right back in the groove.

"Signez-la'!"
Cox 6
Vitamine (France)
This impressive French import features an extremely funky bassline, well-placed percussive kicks, smooth soulful keys and a pumping male vocal sample. This is a record we won't soon forget. Fans of the French sounds can easily mix this into any deep-house set.

"I Need A Love"
KC Flightt feat. Tanaj Perry
Radikal
Known as the inventor of New Jersey hip house and for such hits as "Let's Get Jazzy" and "Jump For Joy," KC Flightt returns to the scene as the front man on this energetic club track that is based on Van Halen's worldwide smash, "Jump." KC lifts the hook from the rock classic and melts it into a thick barrage of thumping house beats that are accented with a haunting bass line riff. He then coats the combination with a sharp array of spoken lyrics. And as an added bonus, KC flips a original composition on the B-side that lays on the trancy side of house and features the vocal prowess of Ms. Perry on backgrounds. "Bills Bills Bills"
Destiny's Child
Columbia
Destiny's latest single gets pumped up with three fierce house mixes by Maurice Joshua - all three are slick renditions of what was a regulation R&B track. But with the hard edgey commercial house sound of the "Digital Black n' Groove Mix" and the smooth soulful vibe of "Maurice's Livegig," this track gets a much needed shot in the arm.

"Get Your Hands Up"
New People
21st Century

Freddy "The Edit" Rivera puts together a hard house thumper that encompasses a hip-hop theme and manages to mesh the two together to form a slick hip-house hybrid. The essence of the track revolves around an uptempo, beat-heavy rhythm, while the backbone is structured with some hip-hop party chants, an almost subliminal bass line and an occasional background sound stab. A nice twist of house and hip hop that will appeal equally to both crowds. For more information, contact (201) 313-5911.

"Kick Your Legs Up Higher"
P.I.M.P. Project
Tommy Boy Silver

After their success with "In My House," P.I.M.P. Project returns with an injection of West Coast energy that hits harder than an earthquake. With an assortment of raw power and street savvy, the trio of DJ Irene, Mark V and Poogie Bear prove once again that the combination of vicious synth work and rock-hard kicks, along with a wicked vocal hook will always move a crowd. Not for the timid and weak of heart. For more information, contact (212) 388-8395.

"Ultra Obscene"
Breakbeat Era
XL/1500 Records

Two questions worth asking when trying to groove on drum-n-bass: "Does it move along without repeating itself?" And "Is it using fresh sounds?" Roni Size, for one, has been a mine for freshness as well as a breakbeat doctor in the genre. Check out the odd juxtapositions on the title track, with vocals by Leonie Laws. "Late Morning," book-ended by a lo-fi guitar line, is one of drum-n-bass' more sublime moments. Along with fellow d-n-b knob-twirler DJ Die, BreakBeat Era adds vocals to an otherwise frenetic pace.

"I Will Go With You"
Donna Summer
Epic

This stunning new dance track featuring the diva of all divas will keep old fans and new DJs smiling. With a soaring performance from Summer and remixes by Club 69, Hex Hector, and Rosabel you can be sure dancefloors will be covered. All four mixes will work the body, but that "Rosabel Dark Dub" is just what that 3-a.m. crowd ordered - deep minimal and deliciously intense. Do not miss.

"Eeah Dada"
La Bionda
ZYX Music

This cool Euro-flavored dance tapper isn't too sugary for the evening crowd or too underground for daytime radio. The vocals are on the Top-40 side of the dance spectrum, but they work nicely with the thick musical production of party pop. A sweet addition to any set. For more information, contact (212) 944-2590.

"Thug Connection"
Papoose feat. AZ & Kool G Rap
Rockboy Street

On the B-side "Alphabetical Slaughter," Papoose gets loose with a non-stop barrage lyrical phrases and rhyme manipulations. "Thug Connection," however, has a little more commercial stuff going on and Papoose catches some flava from vets AZ and Kool G Rap. All in all, a phat debut from another microphone fiend.

"Phuture 2000"
Carl Cox
Moonshine

Sounding a lot like Seal caught in a futuristic time warp somewhere within the depths of a Chicago/U.K. acid house scene, Cox whips up an ultra-hot houser. Ambient retro grooves and smooth cosmic rhythms combined with subtle hints of Baby Ford and "Killer" make this masterpiece an instant classic. The future of house is at hand. Highly recommended! For more information, contact (310) 652-8145.

"Boogalu" (EP)
Frankie Feliciano
MAW

This double-sided gem features Feliciano at his best. First off, "One Note Samba" is the bomb. It's a three-mix cut that bumps and jumps over a slinky chord and sexy basline - DJs should go mad. On the flip, there's a little horn flava served up on "A Place In The Sun," which kicks a cool jazz vibe as well. Groovy.

"Back Again" (DJ Self's Booty Mix)
Channel 2
DMC

DJ Self tears up this hard house remix with an assortment of rip-rocking beats, pushy acid strips, slap-happy hand claps and a rigid processed guitar vamp followed by the occasional lighting-quick scratch. Add to that a tapped-out vocal snip and a small arsenal of sound clips and you have the makings of another John "DJ" Self, across-the-board smash. For more information, contact (323) 651-2230.

"Never Forget (When You Touch Me)"
Hardrive:2000 Featuring Lynae
Strictly Rhythm

From the forthcoming Hardrive:2000 album produced by New York's favorite son, "Little" Louie Vega, comes this tasty morsel of jazzy house happiness. "Never Forget" kicks off with an array of tight beats and live percussion that set the stage for Lynae's smooth vocal performance. Passionate and sweet harmonies follow and glide effortlessly over revolving organ chords, smokey electric guitar riffs, fat bass licks and crisp piano hits. A super track. For more information, contact (212) 254-2400.

"Disco Inferno"
Cyndi Lauper
Jellybean

Cyndi Lauper returns for more fun on this fierce new house jam with mixes from Soul Solution, Plasmic Honey, and Boris & Beck. DJs get an edgy, progressive house journey with Boris & Beck's "Roxy Dub," while the Soul Solution mix is more on the traditional house style. Cyndi gives a great vocal performance and shows she hasn't lost a step.

"Beta" (EP)
Dana Kelley
Sugardish

Producer Dana Kelley gets deep on this four-track thriller that features two ultra cool vocal moments. The smooth and vibey "Left With Nothing" showcases vocalist David Walker's considerable talents over a smokey house groove filtered to perfection. "Got 2 Groove" with singers Deborah and Ida Burroughs goes more for that trancey hypnotic vibe and will be an underground favorite.

"8 Days"
Jade Starling
Chemical

A surprising dose of progressive flavor from the former pop diva, "8 Days" combines churning club-ready grooves, powerful dancefloor breakdowns and a Stonesy vocal hook. Check Rob Lee's "Evolution Anthem" remix for a deep underground jaunt. From Starling's upcoming CandyFlip album. Jim Tremayne.

"Profound Sounds, Vol. 1"
Josh Wink
Ovum/Ruffhouse/Columbia

From the deepest of deep ("D2" by Johnannes Heil & Heiko Laux and "Anjua" by K.A.B.) to more snappy flavors (Mood II Swing's dub of Sylk 130's "When the Funk Hits the Fan") and ultra-sassy moments ("K-Mart Shopping" by Merio's Dubwork Meets Kathy Lee), Wink creates a cohesive vibe that permeates this ultra-underground mix CD. Check DJ Dozia's churning groover "Pop Kulture." Educational and addicting.

"Logic Pride Vol. 2"
Various Artists
Logic

This sweet new compilation offers great mixes and a few unreleased remixes of some of dance music's cool-est tracks. Standout cuts include the fierce "Ether Mix" of Blondie's "Maria," the hard-to-find "Welcome Mix" of Joi Cardwell's "Last Chance For Love," and the ultra-hot Love Inc.'s "You're A Super- star." Martha Wash's bangin' "Come" and the Ralphie Rosario clas- sic "You Used To Hold Me" are also in the mix. Need I say more? These 11 tracks will keep your party jumpin' all summer long.

"Y2K: Beat the Clock"
Various Artists
Columbia

Here's a no-brainer for the DJ who wants to get the big-beat party started without breaking the bank. With an assortment of ubiquitous, marquee tracks including Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Skank," The Crystal Method's "Busy Child," "Bang On!" by the Propel- lerheads and "Lost In Space (Theme)" by Apollo Four Forty, this comp might not put you in stead with the most cutting-edge party jocks in town. But whip out The Orb's "Toxygene" and you'll surely receive some strange looks - that and The Chems ("Electrobank") and Underworld ("Born Slippy").

"The House Movement"
Todd Terry
Master Dance Tones

Mixmaster and mega-producer Todd Terry takes a moment to show off his mixing skills on this slammin' new mix compilation CD. With 14 tracks that will blow the roof off (including several of his own), Terry shows why he's one of the most in-demand DJs in the world today. For some highlights check out Kym Mazelle's "A Place In My Heart," De Effect's "Come On," and Martha Wash's "Catch The Light." It's a nonstop tour de force of big beats and deep basslines that will set any party off.

"House of Irma, Vol. 1"
Various Artists
Irma

One of the original Italian dance labels Irma Records drops a sizzling collection that sounds as good today as they did when first released. From Jestofunk's Happy feat. Ce Ce Rogers thru Nikita Warren's "I Need You" and Key Tronics Ensemble's "We Need Music," as well as Double Dee's "I'm In Love"...this is an essential collection for any dance music enthusiast. Great stuff from one of Italy's best.

"Profilin' The Hits"
Various Artists
Arista

This old school compilation features some of Profile Records' most memorable hip-hop classics, including Run-DMC's "It's Like That," Rob Base and EZ Rock's anthem "It Takes Two," and Special Ed's very cool "I Got It Made," to name a few. There are also classics from Dana Dane, N2Deep, Poor Righteous Teachers, and more. A great collection for those who know and appreciate the old school and a great learning tool for today's young DJs.
